It was the first Hogan iron to be forged by Endo Manufacturing in Japan. The ’99 Apex is the epitome of a Hogan forged iron design. The second was my prototyping contractor Tom Stites, an ex-Hogan R&D staffer who would convert our CAD files to hittable specimens. The new Ben Hogan clubs will be introduced in 2015. Terry Koehler has assembled a world class Research and Development team based in Fort Worth, Texas, where Ben Hogan golf clubs were first produced. They are cavity back with little offset, only a modest mid-size head, so they are easy to hit and do not overly punish mis-hits. This re-introduction of Ben Hogan golf clubs coincides with the 60(th) anniversary of the first Ben Hogan irons in the fall of 1954. At one time Hogan golf was known for making some of the best forged irons in the world and today when you call their new owner Callaway they don’t even have a Ben Hogan. The Hogan Edge Forged irons are the perfect mix of playability and forgiveness for a low to mid-handicap player. You might not remember this since there has been nothing going on with the Ben Hogan brand since the purchase. The first was my CAD operator Charles Lovett who had a keen eye for blades after he had been hired away from Mizuno. Late in 2003, Callaway agreed to purchase Ben Hogan Golf. I had two big assets available to me in the execution of the new Hogan Apex irons. Hogan’s design characteristics I ended up creating the infamous Hogan iron chart using a 1-megapixel digital camera and black fabric backdrop as I photographed every iron on my credenza “photo studio”. I was ready to pursue this project only after doing much homework, studying every Hogan design I could find and by interviewing past Hogan Company employees. This next club I designed must be an authentic Hogan in every aspect.

The Hogan Edge was the very first full production forged cavity back iron from a major manufacturer. Up until the release of the first Edge iron, Hogan irons were strictly forged blades. My biggest challenge in designing the next generation of Hogan products: Do NOT design a Top-Flite club with “Hogan” stamped on it. For Hogan iron purists, the Edge might seem like an odd club to find on this list, but let me assure you it holds an important place in the history of the company. Hogan’s company and had my dream job drop into my lap when Spalding purchased the Ben Hogan Company in 1997. This iron is one of my all time favorite designs.

Hogan is making the PTx PRO available in 5-, 6- and 7-piece sets, depending on how long of a long iron you’d like in. Material: Billet Forged 1030 Carbon Steel with Nickel/Chrome Plating The loft structure remains what purists would consider more or less traditional, and are identical to the original PTx irons, starting at a 22-degree 4-iron with four degree loft increments up to a 46-degree pitching wedge.
